Why There’s No Such Thing as Normal

In this episode of Real, Brave & Unstoppable, I talk about the world normal.

When my ex and I started our divorce process, one of the most painful things for me was the loss of my “normal” family.

No one in my own family had ever been divorced before. I didn’t have many friends who had been divorced. All through my life, I had known a “normal” family to look like two parents and their children living under the same roof.

When that crumbled and my family looked different, I had a very hard time coming to terms with it.

I would see “normal” families in church, or walking down the street and I would burst into tears. I no longer had that.

I gradually grew to learn that there really is no such thing as normal.

The families that looked perfect and normal walking down the street? They aren’t perfect.

The women on the cover of Vogue? They aren’t normal (in fact, only 5% of the population is the same height and weight of these women!).

Children that sit still and absorb information the way it is taught in our schools? They aren’t normal either.

Normal is learned. Normal changes based on where you are, who you’re with and what you’re doing.

The thing with normal is that when you feel like you’re normal, you tend to find other people like you that you feel comfortable with. But you’re missing out on a bigger world of people who may be different from you that have much to offer you (and you have much to offer them).

When others identify as normal, you feel excluded and that can even eat away at your self-worth.

Listen to this episode to learn more and get some ideas on how you can start to watch out for where normal shows up in your life and how it might be keeping you from connecting with some pretty amazing relationships and experiences.
