I’ve always embraced the term “badass”. But recently, I read an article written by someone who hates the term badass. So, I did a little digging and a little contemplating.
The dictionary defines badass as a tough, uncompromising, and intimidating person.
I’m definitely not that, nor do I really want to be any of those things. Well, tough, maybe, but I like the word strong better.
I did a little more digging and I found things like:
A badass is a strong, confident, bold woman who knows her own mind. She is sexy, she is funny, she does what she wants, and she doesn’t need anyone’s approval. Being a badass is about knowing your own worth and not letting anyone else mess with that. It’s about taking control and becoming the best version of yourself. (from bare.dating)
I like that. But I think there’s more.
I found a quote by Katie Couric that I also think describes how I feel about the word badass:
A badass woman stands up for herself, is confident, and is not afraid to challenge the hierarchy, the patriarchy, or conventional thinking.” ~ Katie Couric
Much of what defines a badass to me is self-confidence. Self-assuredness. Knowing you you are and standing up for yourself. Having your own back.
Never giving up, believing in yourself. Believing in and encouraging others.
Being a badass doesn’t mean being the smartest, the thinnest, the prettiest, the loudest or the most outspoken. Badasses don’t need the approval of other people because the only approval they need is from themselves.
A badass knows she’s going to fail sometimes, and when she does, she looks for the lessons. She finds a way to get up again. She knows that failure and hardship don’t define her. It’s her response to failure and hardship that does.
A badass trusts herself to handle her emotions and to have her own back in life. She trusts herself to make decisions that are best for her based on her intuition. She is her own person.
Badasses come in all shapes and sizes. We are mothers, daughters, bosses, grandmothers, wives, entrepreneurs, artists, scientists, teachers, nurses and everything in between.
